Sure! Here are some links to some of the tips you could implement today in your store:
- Add a "holiday help" page - when will I receive my product? what gift wrapping options do you offer? are you closed for the holidays? what is your returns policy? Provide answers to all those specific questions in one place.
- Add a category for stocking stuffers - create a category that groups small and affordable items.
- Help your visitors find gifts - feature products men/women, by age and by price. This could be as simple as adding some extra categories or adding a section to your homepage to feature specific items.
Good luck for your Christmas sales!

Make Money on eBay
An interesting blog entry about a study on Ebay. Testing on Ebay revealed that a lower opening bid price and higher shipping charges led to higher overall revenue. Whether this is generalizable for all product types or for shopping sites is up for debate. It does raise the question of whether you as a merchant have tested the relationship between various costing strategies and overall profit.
Marketing Experiments Journal tested this explicitly for shopping sites: Shipping Charges — How to Use Shipping Charges as a Marketing Tactic (requires free registration).
As well as covering three common tactics for setting relative levels of product prices and shipping charges, this article goes on how to effectively offer free shipping as an incentive.
Valuable stuff.

Calls-to-Action, Points-of-Resolution and Resolving Doors
This article from GrokDotCom discusses the use of links in marrying the sales process of a site to the buyer's decision process. Links allow you to move the customer through your sales process, answer anticipated questions, and then offer the customer reentry into the sales process.
What does this mean for your osCommerce store? I am briefly going to comment on what it doesn't mean. Don't limit yourself to one page of product information! Communicating and selling effectively online requires that you do not limit your content on the products you offer to a single product information page.
Think about the types of people you are attracting to your site, the type of people who know buy your products. Think about the questions your potential customers have and how you can answer them. Think about how you present your product information to your different customers. Are you allowing for the variety of ways people make their purchase decision?
If you are interested in improving the way your site sells, I highly recommend the articles at GrokDotCom. Another taste: 3 Tips for Great Web Content.
